Welcome

The Silver Halide Centre is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving the art and science of traditional analog photographic processes.  Through small workshops, individual instruction and individual pursuit, participants will be able to cultivate and sustain knowledge and competency in B&W analog processes.  The centre will also serve as a cultural hub for those who are interested in developing and refining the skill of traditional photographic practice.

We are hoping to open the facility in  early 2024. When established, it will feature:

  • A large darkroom for group instruction and workshops.

  • Four independent darkrooms where participants can work alone.

  • A classroom area, where lectures and demonstrations will take place. When not in use as a classroom, it will serve as a lounge for discussions about the artform.

    Proposed floor plan.

It will be a valuable resource for those both for those who love traditional photography and are familiar with the process but no longer have access to facilities, and to youth who may not have experienced the process through traditional methods.

The darkrooms will be outfitted with professional level equipment and will feature a complete B&W archival process. The labs will be able to print up to 20×24 inches from all negative sizes up to 4×5. Chemistry, film and photographic paper will be available for sale.  While we have a vast array of equipment patiently waiting to be installed, donations of equipment will be greatly appreciated.    Please contact us if you have any equipment for sale or for donation.
